Eric Friend has worked as a sound designer, engineer, and composer for the past twenty years on feature films, shorts, documentaries, animation, television and commercials for such clients as MTV, 20th Century Fox, ABC, Comedy Central, Sony, Nickelodeon, and Sesame Street. Eric's work has been featured at numerous film festivals including Sundance, SXSW, Venice, Cannes, Berlin, Tribeca, Los Angeles, Dallas, Austin, and more. Eric also works with film students at the University of Texas, mixing student films and teaching sound design.
Eric learned filmmaking from his father as a child in Michigan. He moved to Austin, Texas to attend the University of Texas Radio/ Television/ Film program, graduating in 1995. He began working for Richard Linklater’s Detour Filmproductions as a student. Beginning in 1994, Eric worked with Mike Judge, recording, editing, animating, and maintaining Mike’s Protools recording studio and Avid editing suites. In 2009 Eric opened Friendo Sound, which later became Optical Audio in 2016.
Eric studied piano in Michigan with legendary soul/jazz/funk pianist Eddie Russ and the great Dr. Morris Lawrence at Washtenaw Community College. He played keyboards and toured with the band Spoon for several years, and has played with Sally Crewe, Crooked I, and other bands. Currently Eric plays keyboards and guitar with The Reivers. His compositions have been in feature films, documentaries, television, commercials, and radio.
